Like many homes on San Francisco’s steeply sloping sites, this seemingly modest home seen from the street side opens at the rear with expansive views and multiple levels below. As is often the case in urban houses, the stairwells are the key to unlocking the puzzle. Using an existing low entryway to intensify a new skylit stair to the second floor living level, we could save the original façade –not to mention precious resources– and still dramatically improve the livability of the home.
