El Pípila: Storywall
Our friends and colleagues at Design is Play created this 34 foot long wall graphic to anchor the design of our restaurant, El Pípila. They introduce a language of symbols and patterns inspired by traditional Mexican textiles that celebrates the centrality of women like chef and owner, Guadalupe Guerrero, to the cultivation and preservation of Guanajuatan culture.
The designers reinterpreted the space as a metaphoric garden: a gathering spot alluded to in the panel with four butterflies around a blossom, two of which have hearts on their wings. (Guadalupe and her two daughters figure prominently in one of the mural’s central panels.) Dogs shown underneath the greenery are guardians of the day—protectors of this garden of Guanajuatan culture and cuisine. Dark vertical borders are nocturnal scenes populated by guardians of the night: dogs with stars and comets, and scorpions.
Design is Play’s involvement blossomed over time to eventually include not only the central graphic running the length of the space, but the full brand positioning and graphic design for the restaurant as well. Please contact us for more detailed information.
